Product Characteristics:
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is an inorganic compound, commonly known as limestone, chalk, stone powder, marble, etc. Calcium carbonate is neutral, essentially insoluble in water, but soluble in hydrochloric acid. It is one of the most common substances on Earth, found in rocks such as aragonite, calcite, chalk, limestone, marble, and travertine, and is also the main component of animal bones or shells. Calcium carbonate is also an important building material and has a wide range of industrial applications.
Potential Application Fields:
Light calcium carbonate can be used as a leavening agent, flour treatment agent, anti-caking agent, acidity regulator, nutritional fortifier, curing agent, etc. In China, it is approved for use in various foods requiring leavening agents and chewing gum bases, according to GMP. It can also be used as a flour improver with a maximum usage of 0.03%; in milk powder 7.5–18g; in soy milk powder and soybean powder 4–20g; in soft drinks 0.4–3.4g; in lotus root starch 6–8g; in ready-to-eat breakfast cereal products 2–7g. FDA (184.1192, 2000) does not impose restrictive regulations, following GMP. When used as a leavening agent, it is often combined with other types, such as sodium bicarbonate and alum, to form a leavening agent that slowly releases carbon dioxide upon heating, producing a uniform and fine leavening body in food, improving the quality of pastries, bread, and biscuits. Additionally, it has a calcium fortification effect; the smaller the calcium carbonate particles, the easier they are to absorb. In Japan, light calcium carbonate is used as a leavening agent, with a general usage of 1% in food.
Used as a feed nutritional fortifier.
Calcium carbonate whiskers are one of the earliest and most widely used fillers in the rubber and plastics industries. In the rubber industry, they are widely used in hoses, rubber sheets, rubber cloth, rubber shoes, and medical products, serving as an excellent filler to reduce product costs. In the plastics industry, they are mainly used in soft PVC compounds, plastisols, and glass fiber-reinforced polyester composites, such as wire sheathing, artificial leather, and other extruded and calendered products, with a general usage of about 20 parts. They are also extensively used in calcium-plastic materials, such as rigid PVC pipes and sheets. Additionally, this product is widely used in the paper, coatings, ink industries, and daily chemical products.
Compared with general granular calcium carbonate, calcium carbonate whiskers exhibit significant reinforcement and toughening effects. Calcium carbonate whiskers can be used to reinforce plastics and rubber. For example, as a reinforcement modifier for resins such as polyamide, polycarbonate, thermoplastic polyester, ABS, and PP, they not only reduce costs but also improve the product's flexural strength, dimensional stability, and thermal stability. In the paper industry, they are used as fillers for high-grade paper, which can be used as flame-retardant paper for indoor decoration, etc. Calcium carbonate whiskers are non-toxic and are an ideal substitute for asbestos, replacing asbestos in friction materials such as automotive brake pads.
As a filler for rubber, it can make the rubber glossy, with high elongation, tensile strength, and good wear resistance. It is also used as a filler in artificial leather, wires, PVC, coatings, inks, and paper. When used in the production of microporous rubber, it can ensure uniform foaming.
Used as an analytical reagent, such as a standard reagent. In emission spectrum analysis, it serves as a sample flux and volatile aid. It is also used in silicon wafer slicing adhesive, thick-film capacitor materials, optical glass, and as a raw material in the pharmaceutical industry.
Used as a white filler in plastics, paper, rubber, coatings, inks, etc., it is one of the most widely used fillers. It is inexpensive, widely sourced, and has low relative density. In addition to its bulking effect, it can improve processing performance and product properties. In adhesive manufacturing, it is used as a filler in epoxy adhesives, nylon sealants, chloroprene sealants, etc. In some soft PVC, it has a heat stabilization effect, reducing the amount of heat stabilizer used. In PVC paste, it serves as a viscosity regulator. In wire sheathing and artificial leather, it improves the color stability of products. In the daily chemical industry, it is used as a raw material for toothpaste, tooth powder, etc. In medicine, it is used as an antacid for gastric and duodenal ulcers and as an antidote for acidosis. In agriculture, it is used as a feed additive and antibacterial agent for dairy cows. In industrial waste gas treatment, it is used to remove SO2 from sulfur-containing exhaust gases. In water treatment, it is used as a neutralizer and flocculant for industrial wastewater. In felt production, it is used as an anti-adhesive agent. In wine brewing, it is used to eliminate sourness, and it is also used as a filler in the production of matches, pencils, crayons, insulation materials, welding rods, etc.
Used as a raw material in the production of face powder, pressed powder, liquid foundation, rouge, etc. In the manufacture of powdered cosmetics, it is used as a fragrance mixer. It is also mainly used in toothpaste as an abrasive, belonging to the hard abrasives used in toothpaste.
